Analysis of settlement with improvement through stone columns

SIC-Color-Logo“We choosed program DC-Vibro for the design application of vibro works i.e. vibro compaction and vibro replacement. Throughout the testing and purchasing process the team of IRM ltd. replied quickly. Our experience with the product is positive. DC-Vibro is user friendly and offers fast simulation.”

To improve the soil conditions, stone columns are installed into the ground with a depth vibrator. This forms a composite system consisting of stone columns and soil. For design improvement factors are determined, which define the improvement of the soil in comparison to the original situation. With that the Young's modulus Es is increased and the settlement is decreased by this calculated factor.

The following ideal conditions are assumed:

  • The column material is not compressible
  • The unit weight of columns and soil is neglected

Furthermore it is assumed that the soil will be displaced during column installation in such a manner that the supporting lateral force is equal to the hydrostatic pressure, so that the active earth pressure coefficient K is equal to 1.

DC-Doster & Christmann GmbH, based in Munich, Germany, delivers 30 years of experience in development of software for soil engineering.
